The Parade in Norwood is a tiny yet versatile shopping and entertainment precinct that offers a plethora of services to its customers. One of my favourite reasons for visiting this part of Adelaide is its colorful array of cuisines, which can be found on the main strip as well as the little pockets branching off it.
One well-kept secret resides on Margaret Street; adjacent to the quieter, outdoor section of Argo – Nonna & I. This fine dining Italian restaurant has become one of the most popular spots to enjoy quality food that is prepared by a chef whose passion for food is appealingly larger than life.
The kitchen is run by chef Khalil Rashwan and his story is pretty inspiring. Born in Egypt, chef Khalil’s passion for cooking comes from his mother and grandmother’s cooking. He has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience while working at the Italian restaurants of Manhattan for over 7 years and consequently achieving his Culinary Diploma. After successfully running Nonna’s Authentic Italian fine dining restaurant & Nonna’s Pizza Art in Pennsylvania, chef Khalil expanded his culinary knowledge at the International Hotel Management Institute at Lucerne, Switzerland, where he earned his Honours Degree in European Culinary Arts. He has now graced his talented cooking skills at Nonna & I, right here in lil’ ol’ Adelaide!
One of the main reasons that makes dining at Nonna & I appealing is that most dietary requirements are accommodated into cooking a wholesome and hearty Italian meal for its customers. Offering vegetarian, vegan, and paleo options, you can be assured that there is something for everyone here. Additionally, chef Khalil often visits the tables that he’ll be serving, so you can always ask for modifications to your dish directly to him, as his motto is to come hungry, leave happy and on the three occasions that I’ve been here, I can safely say that he holds this motto true to his heart. There are so many options of food that you can either enjoy solo or as a share platter with friends:
- Fresh Mozzarella Tomato + marinated olives + roasted capsicum
- Flounder (Flathead) Francese dipped in egg, and sautéed in lemon butter wine sauce
- Prawn alla Nonna with prawns and shallots in a pink brandy sauce over capellini
A fair warning though – you will want to have e v e r y t h i n g on the menu, because they all sound divine and appetizing! The above-mentioned three dishes were oozing of fresh flavours, colorful ingredients, a sprinkle of herbs, and a generous drizzle of olive oil. While it may appear that the dishes have a small variety of stuff, bringing them together will make you feel like you have a party in your mouth.
For those who would like to enjoy the delicacies from this restaurant at home, there are options of take away from their newest pizza joint, which is conveniently situated right next to Nonna & I – Pizza Art & I. Offering gourmet and classic options of pizzas, the meals are filling and can feed up to three people with its generous sizes. The pizza dough is made from scratch and this is apparent with the first bite, where you are welcomed to a light and fluffy texture. Coupled with the fresh and unique ingredients that add to the presentation and taste of the pizza, it is heaven. Having tried a couple of the pizzas from here, you can see that the chef has incorporated the simplest of ingredients to create a winning pizza every time. Some of the options include:
- (Gourmet) Salmon and Ricotta Cheese pizza
- Stromboli with mozzarella cheese, diced beef, herbs, and a side of sauce
- (Classic) Chicken and Ranch pizza
I don’t think I’ve ever met a chef who is so enthusiastic and passionate about food, but that’s what I admire about chef Khalil and his beautiful meals that deliver not only in presentation, but also in taste.
Next time you find yourself hungry on the Parade, make sure you pop by Nonna & I, where you will be treated to an authentic Italian meal that will leave your belly happy! Better yet, you can also book in advance online to secure a table, especially if you are planning on going in as a big group.
